简介:Background:Outdoorexerciseisanenjoyablewayforindividualstoimprovefitness,butitisdependentonweatherconditions.Thisstudyexaminestheassociationbetweenweatherconditionsandoutdoorexerciseafteradjustmentforage,sex,race,andsocioeconomicstatus.Methods:WeuseddatarepresentativeofAmericanadultsfromtheUniversityofMichigan/ThomsonReutersJune2013surveysofconsumers(coreandsupplement)toinvestigateself-reportedexercisebehaviorinsummerandwinter.Multivariatemultinomiallogisticregressionmodelsestimatedtheoddsofdelayedorindoorexercisecomparedwithoutdoorexercise.Results:Ofthe502respondents,16.3%didnotregularlyexerciseoutdoors(i.e.,atleastonceaweek),andmanywoulddelayexercisebothinsummer(51.8%)andwinter(43.9%).Individualslistingrainasthepredominantadverseweatherconditionhad3.33timeshigheroddsofexercisingindoors(95%confidenceinterval(CI):1.34-8.28)and3.49timeshigheroddsofdelayingexercise(95%CI:1.69-7.21)comparedwiththosementioningheatasthepredominantadversecondition.Individualsforwhomiceorsnowwasanadversewinterweatherconditionweremorelikelytodelayexercise(oddsratio(OR)=3.34;95%CI:1.19-9.36),comparedwiththoseconcernedwithcold.Conclusion:Thisstudyfoundthatrace,age,andeducationexacerbatethenegativeeffectsofadverseweatherconditionsonthedecisiontoexerciseoutdoors.Accordingly,anyrecommendationforanindividualtoexerciseoutdoorsshouldbecombinedwithanevaluationoftheindividual’soutdoorenvironmentalongwithstrategiesfortheindividualtocontinueexercising,indoorsoroutdoors,whenadverseweatherispresent.
