In1989workbeganonmergingfiniteanddiscreteelements.During1990algorithmicsolutionsforthenewcombinedmethodweredeveloped,togetherwithaC-basedimplementationknownastheYcode.In2004thesedevelopmentsandimplementationswerepublishedasatextbook.QueenMaryUniversityofLondon(QMUL)andImperialCollegearecurrentlyengagedinaresearchprojecttomakeYcodesinboth2Dand3DavailableinOpenSourceformatandwithmainlygeoscienceproblemsinmind.TheresultisasetofOpenSourcetoolsforGeoscience(VGW),keycomponentsofwhicharesummarisedinthispaper,togetherwithillustrativerangeofsimulationresults.
