The effects of mean sea level rise and strengthened winds on extreme sea levels in the Baltic Sea

摘要 Meansealevelriseandclimatologicalwindspeedchangesoccuraspartoftheongoingclimatechangeandfutureprojectionsofbothvariablesarestillhighlyuncertain.HeretheBalticSea'sresponseinextremesealevelstoperturbationsinmeansealevelandwindspeedsisinvestigatedinaseriesofsimulationswithanewlydevelopedstormsurgemodelbasedonthenucleusforEuropeanmodelingoftheocean(NEMO)-Nordic.Asimplelinearmodelwithonlytwotunableparametersisfoundtocapturethechangesinthereturnlevelsextremelywell.Theresponsetomeansealevelriseislinearandnearlyspatiallyuniform,meaningthatameansealevelriseof1mincreasesthereturnlevelsbyaequalamounteverywhere.Theresponsetowindspeedperturbationsismorecomplicatedandreturnlevelsarefoundtoincreasemorewheretheyarealreadyhigh.ThisbehaviourisalarmingasitsuggeststhatalreadyfloodingproneregionsliketheGulfofFinlandwillbedisproportionallyadverselyaffectedinafuturewindierclimate.
