Modeling TCP Incast Issue in Data Center Networks and an Adaptive Application-Layer Solution

摘要 Indatacenters,thetransmissioncontrolprotocol(TCP)incastcausescatastrophicgoodputdegradationtoapplicationswithamany-to-onetrafficpattern.Inthispaper,weintendtotameincastatthereceiver-sideapplication.Towardsthisgoal,wefirstdevelopananalyticalmodelthatformulatestheincastprobabilityasafunctionofconnectionvariablesandnetworkenvironmentsettings.Wecombinethemodelwiththeoptimizationtheoryandderivesomeinsightsintominimizingtheincastprobabilitythroughtuningconnectionvariablesrelatedtoapplications.Then,enlightenedbytheanalyticalresults,weproposeanadaptiveapplication-layersolutiontotheTCPincast.Thesolutionequallyallocatesadvertisedwindowstoconcurrentconnections,anddynamicallyadaptsthenumberofconcurrentconnectionstothevaryingconditions.SimulationresultsshowthatoursolutionconsistentlyeludesincastandachieveshighgoodputinvariousscenariosincludingtheoneswithmultiplebottlenecklinksandbackgroundTCPtraffic.
